- Elected to the Legislative Council in 1927.
- Chairman of the District Board of Muzaffarpur; organized relief during the 1934 Bihar Earthquake, widely recognized.
- Vice-Chancellor of United Patna University in 1945.
- Appointed Ambassador to Nepal by Pandit Nehru; during his tenure, the King of Nepal took refuge in the Indian Embassy (1950).
- Appointed Governor of undivided Punjab in 1953; oversaw development of Chandigarh city and Bhakra-Nangal dam.
- Appointed Ambassador to Japan in 1958; conferred honorary doctorate from Ohtani University.
- Returned to India due to health issues; served as Director of Reserve Bank of India and IDBI, and chaired several companies.
- Honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 1977 for distinguished service.
