- Served as Chairman of the Standing Committee and School Board of Satara Municipality.
- President of Satara City Congress Committee from 1938 to 1946.
- Member of the Executive Committee of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
- Secretary of Satara District Congress Committee from 1939 to 1946.
- Participated in the Individual Civil Disobedience Movement in 1940; he was the first detenue from the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and was detained for a year.
- Arrested on August 9, 1942, during the Quit India Movement and detained for 15 months.
- Elected in 1946 to the Bombay Legislative Assembly from Satara District.
- Re-elected in 1952 as Member of Legislative Assembly from Bombay.
- He was the first and youngest Harijan Minister.
