He rose on the political firmament in 1968; Elected to Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in 1972; Appointed Deputy Chairman of Madhya Pradesh State Transport Corporation; Elected to MP Vidhan Sabha in 1977 and 1980; Appointed as Minister of State in Arjun Singh's Cabinet and given the charge of Higher Education Department; Elevated to the Cabinet Minister in 1983; Appointed President of the MP Congress Committee; On March 13, 1985, he was appointed Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh; Resigned from the post of Chief Minister on Feb.13, 1988 and assumed the office of Union Minister of Health, Family Welfare and Civil Aviation on Feb.14, 1988; Elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 1988; Appointed Governor of Uttar Pradesh on May 26, 1993 and held the office till May 3, 1996.
